Experian Hitwise Reveals Popularity of Euro 2012 P2P Streaming in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, June 28, 2012 — Despite access to live telecasts of Euro 2012 via pay-TV services, soccer fanatics in Hong Kong turned to P2P streaming sites for live matches. According to latest analytics from Experian using its online competitive intelligence tool Experian® Hitwise®, nearly half of the top 20 search terms in Hong Kong containing “EURO 2012” were pegged with keywords pertaining to P2P streaming sites (see Figure 1).

Visit share for sites that offer live streaming or streaming software in the week ending June 16 experienced a sharp spike, with www.wiziwig.tv and www.myp2p-eu.net registering more than 400 per cent increase in traffic (see Figure 2).

Experian Hitwise also found that the most popular soccer players among Hong Kong people are Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Spain’s Fernando Torres (see Figure 3).

Apart from reading about the players’ abilities and progress, soccer fans in Hong Kong were also keen on gossip related to their personal lives. For example, searches about Wayne Rooney’s new hairdo came up as the second most popular search following his name. In addition, famous wives, girlfriends and sons of footballers were one of the top search variations. “Cristiano Ronaldo girlfriend” was the second most popular search variation besides his own name. 

Top search variations used by fans in Hong Kong include Euro 2012 schedule, Euro 2012 results, Euro 2012 live, Euro 2012 live stream, Euro 2012 live online (see Figure 1). Variations for the term “Euro 2012” on all search engines in Hong Kong saw a ten-fold increase within four weeks, from May 26 to June 23 (see Figure 4).
