Used diesel cars most popular in Greater London
Nottingham, UK, 6 February 2008 - Sales of both new and used diesel cars have seen an upward trend around the country, but Greater London saw the highest increase in used diesel cars compared to other UK government regions, according to the latest used car sales statistics from Experian®, the global information services company.
Although overall sales of used cars throughout the country fell by 3 per cent during quarter three in 2007 (compared to the same period in 2006), within these figures, sales of used diesel cars saw an increase (up 4 per cent). Sales of used petrol cars fell by 5 per cent.
However, Greater London saw the highest increase in the sale of used diesel cars (up 9 per cent) while used petrol cars fell by 6 per cent.
It was also the region that saw sales of bigger engine used cars remain strong, compared to other regions. Greater London saw the highest increase in the sale of used MPVs (up 9 per cent during quarter three in 2007). Used SUVs also remained popular as sales rose by 10 per cent – the second highest increase in the sale of used SUVs in any region during July, August and September.
Kirk Fletcher, Managing Director of Experian’s Automotive division, said: “Rising fuel prices and environmental concerns mean that car buying habits are changing slightly. It appears that while car buyers are unwilling to give up their big engine cars, they are turning over to diesel cars.
“Diesel cars have a cleaner image than petrol cars thanks to their greater fuel economy and reduced maintenance requirements. However, recent concerns have surfaced linking diesel cars to issues with urban air quality, smog formation, global warming and other environmental issues, so it will be interesting to see how sales fair as these concerns increase.”
