Used car sales fall in Wales
Nottingham, UK, 24 July 2008 - Experian®, the global information services company, today revealed that Wales recorded the sharpest drop in used car sales in the UK during the first quarter of 2008.
Total used car sales in Wales fell by 3.4 per cent, while total used car sales throughout Great Britain fell by 0.5 per cent (from 1,978,465 to 1,999,750 sales).[1]
Sales of used petrol cars have continued to fall around the country (down 1.8 per cent from 1,511,056 to 1,484,371 sales). Wales saw the highest fall in the sale of used petrol cars – down 5.2 per cent.
It was also the country to see the biggest drop in the sale of used executive cars, down 10.3 per cent, compared a drop of 5.3 per cent nationally, (from 91,742 to 86,922 sales).
However, the multi-purpose vehicle continued to be popular and was the only segment that saw an increase in sales in Wales. The Renault Scenic was the most popular selling used multi-purpose vehicle in Wales during quarter one.
Kirk Fletcher, Managing Director of Experian’s Automotive division, said: “Despite the threat of higher tax on the cars with the highest CO2 emissions, sales of larger engine cars, such as multi-purpose vehicles, have still managed to remain strong throughout the country.
“However, car buyers are more aware of the cost of running a car these days. Diesel car sales have been climbing for a number of years now, but if the recent increases in fuel prices continue, sales of alternative fuel cars could pick up more speed.
“Manufacturers are already beginning to look more closely at these vehicles types and some have even announced their intentions for more developments in these areas. This will eventually percolate into the used car market and we predict that we will see a greater boom in the sale of alternative fuel cars in the future.”
