Alternative fuel car sales increase in the South West
Nottingham, UK, 24 July 2008 - The latest used car sales figures from Experian®, the global information services company, reveal a greater shift over to more economical cars, but sales of used cars with larger engines still remain strong.
The South West saw the highest increase in used super minis compared to any other area, with the Ford Fiesta the most popular selling super mini in this region. However, it was also the region to see the second highest increase in the sale of 4x4s compared to any other region, with the Vauxhall Frontera being the most popular 4x4 model.[1]
Experian’s figures also reveal that there could be a potential boom in used cars that run on alternative fuel – up 157.9 per cent in the South West during quarter one compared to the same period in 2007. The Toyota Prius was the best selling alternative fuel used car in the South West. Across the country sales of cars that run on alternative fuel increased from 946 total sales to 1,951 (up 106.2 per cent).
Kirk Fletcher, Managing Director of Experian’s Automotive division, said: “Diesel car sales have been climbing for a number of years now, but in the last couple of years we have seen sales of cars running on alternative fuel begin to pick up pace more rapidly.
“Car buyers are more aware of the cost of running a car these days and if the rapid increase in fuel prices that we saw towards the end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 continues, we will see a boom in the sale of alternative fuel cars, such as electric cars.”
Total used car sales in the South West of England increased by 0.7 per cent, while total used car sales throughout Great Britain fell by 0.5 per cent (from 1,978,465 to 1,999,750 sales).
