We champion the responsible use of AI to enhance productivity, drive innovation, and improve solutions for evolving customer and client needs.

Our Global AI Policy

Our Global AI Policy provides a clear framework for the safe, responsible and scalable adoption of AI throughout Experian.

The policy covers all AI technologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, generative AI (GenAI) and autonomous agents (agentic AI).

AI governance

Responsible AI considerations are embedded at each stage of the process from procurement and design to development and use. We require appropriate human oversight for higher risk uses, prohibit harmful or discriminatory uses, and maintain controls to protect individuals and data.

Experian’s Global AI Risk Council monitors evolving AI developments and risks, reporting to senior leadership, the Executive Risk Management Committee and the Board as required.

Responsible AI principles

Experian’s approach to the use and development of AI technologies is built on a foundation of Responsible AI Principles, aligning with the US National Institute of Standards and Technology’s characteristics of trustworthy AI, which serve as guardrails for all AI activities.

  • Safety: AI must not cause harm to people, property, the environment, or business operations.
  • Security and resiliency: AI systems and applications remain secure against hacking, tampering, or cyber-attacks, and should have backup plans and fail-safes in place to ensure recovery from errors or outages without major disruption.
  • Accountability and transparency: Accountability remains with Experian for AI systems development and deployment, and when AI interacts with consumers or influences decisions about them, individuals are always kept informed with clear and appropriate communication.
  • Explainability and interpretability: AI outputs, particularly those involving high-risk decisions, are reasonably understandable and explainable.
  • Privacy: AI systems must respect data privacy, comply with all privacy laws and policies, and ensure that Experian data is not exposed to unauthorised individuals.
  • Fairness and non-discrimination: AI systems deployed by Experian are fair and free from unwanted bias, with thorough testing to identify and swiftly correct any issues; moreover, individuals affected by AI decisions are be provided with clear avenues to question or appeal those outcomes.

Restricted applications

We enforce strict prohibitions on certain AI applications to uphold responsible practices and mitigate risk. Harmful, discriminatory or unlawful practices are strictly prohibited in line with the Responsible AI Principles.

We also restrict the application of autonomous decision-making systems in sensitive areas or critical operations without proportional human oversight.

These measures are designed to protect stakeholders, ensure compliance and maintain trust in AI-enabled operations.
