Our Heart of Experian Social Responsibility programme fosters financial inclusion, promotes financial education and supports young people and small business entrepreneurs. The Manage Your Future Now Project aims to achieve all three, providing financial education to 18 to 30 year olds and small businesses in Turkey. To do this, we collaborated with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Credit Bureau of Turkey and Habitat Center for Development and Governance.

We focused the first phase of the project at university and high school students and youth representatives from NGOs and local communities. Its purpose was to help them to budget, borrow responsibly and understand the risks of being in debt. To date, the project has reached more than 4,000 young people from 23 cities across Turkey.

The second phase, completed in 2014, trained small businesses and entrepreneurs in financial management and growth strategies, how to interact with the finance sector and how to manage credit risk and access to finance. More than 200 SMEs received this training, in four of Turkey’s largest cities.

In both phases, our volunteer employees ran workshops to train participants, so they could then train their peers through their own workshops. The project therefore improved participants’ financial understanding and gave them valuable organisational and presentation skills.

The project’s success in Turkey has encouraged us to agree to more training programmes. Over the coming year, we will be working with the UNDP in other countries in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
